Twin Gearbox Special
A Unique Model A Engineering Project
A highly distinctive Ford Model A speedster featuring a twin gearbox configuration, designed to extend gearing and improve performance while retaining the character of the original drivetrain.
The Concept
This project was developed as an engineering challenge — to create a usable and engaging vintage vehicle with enhanced performance through a period-style solution.
By incorporating a second gearbox, the car effectively gains a large overdrive, allowing for improved cruising capability while maintaining the mechanical simplicity of the Model A platform.
The Build
The car is road registered and built in the style of a traditional Model A speedster, combining lightweight construction with carefully considered mechanical upgrades.
The engine is overbored to +0.60" and fitted with a high-compression cylinder head, providing increased performance while remaining true to the original design.
A rebuilt period Peugeot honeycomb radiator has been fitted, complementing the overall aesthetic and ensuring the car retains an authentic vintage appearance.
Engineering Highlights
• Twin gearbox configuration providing extended gearing
• Overbored engine (+0.60") with high-compression cylinder head
• Counterbalanced crankshaft for improved performance
• 3.25:1 rear differential ratio
• Period Peugeot honeycomb radiator
This car has been built not just as a technical exercise, but as a usable and enjoyable vehicle. It has proven well suited to events such as beach racing, where its lightweight construction and enhanced gearing offer a clear advantage.
The car competed at the Normandy Beach Races in 2023.
