American LA France Speedster Builds

American La France speedsters represent a unique part of our work and are among Toby’s personal favourites.

These builds begin with the sourcing of historic American fire trucks, often located across the United States. Where possible, original vehicles are preserved and restored in their original form. However, in cases where a truck is no longer viable for full restoration, we undertake a complete mechanical and cosmetic transformation to create a speedster, giving these remarkable machines a new life.

The Concept

Many early American fire trucks were built with large-capacity engines and robust mechanical systems designed for reliability and endurance.

By carefully restoring and reconfiguring these vehicles, we retain their original engineering character while transforming them into powerful, usable vintage speedsters.

This approach ensures that vehicles which might otherwise be lost are preserved and enjoyed in a new form.

The Build

Each project involves a full mechanical rebuild, including engine, drivetrain, and chassis, alongside the construction of a bespoke speedster body.

The original engines — typically 14.5-litre, 6-cylinder T-head units — are rebuilt to a high standard, delivering exceptional torque, reliability, and a distinctive presence both on the road and at events.

Use & Performance

These vehicles are not only visually striking but also highly usable.

They are well suited to long-distance touring, with outstanding reliability and robustness. The ‘39’ example shown below has completed extensive touring across Europe, covering approximately 12,000 miles per year. They are also extremely popular at shows and rallies, where their scale, sound, and presence make them stand out.

Engineering & Characteristics

• Original American La France fire truck chassis and engines
• 14.5-litre 6-cylinder T-head engines
• Full mechanical restoration and rebuild
• Bespoke speedster body construction
• Exceptional torque and long-distance reliability

A Considered Approach

We recognise that many of these vehicles hold historical significance, particularly within the United States. Where a fire truck is suitable for full restoration in its original form, that is always the preferred option.

However, where this is no longer viable, converting the vehicle into a speedster ensures it is preserved, used, and appreciated rather than lost.
